Classes

Taijiquan Drunken Fighter

Concept: A new Class for Pirate Borg

Content: Everything you need to start your adventure as a Drunken Fighter.

Writing: An interesting and well balanced Class, a bit of a throwback to classic Drunken Master-esque movies and other hollywood tropes. Not weighed down overmuch with background, it is a bit of a relief that the Class is left for the Player to make their own as the Classes in the Core Book also do.

Art/design: Artwork is well refined, layout is excellent and easy to access quickly.

Usability: Toning back the overt mysticism this Class make quality use of existing Rules and slightly expands on them in a well balanced way.

The Alchemist

Concept: New Character Class for Pirate Borg

Content: Create your very own Alchemist character for The Dark Caribbean.

Writing: Unfortunately poorly written though the errors are not problematic enough to stop anyone from using the Product.

Art/design: Simple layout, legible if not for the questionable font choices and colour options.

Usability: This one will require some attention to balance for any Harbourmaster who wishes to make use of it as several abilities are quite powerful on this Class.

The Crusader

Concept: The Crusader Class
Content: The Crusader is a zealous and battle-hardened warrior dedicated to carrying out the divine will of their chosen deity. Clad in heavy armor adorned with sacred symbols and wielding powerful weapons, they are a formidable force on the battlefield and a symbol of unwavering faith, regardless of if the cause is just.

Maybe they are part of The Spanish Inquisition (that nobody suspects) or maybe they hunt down heretics who go against the word of Verhu. Or perhaps they a honor another cause? Only you can know.

The Dodo Bird

Concept: A new Sentient Animal Entry

Content: One new Class, The Dodo Bird, for your Sentient Animal Table in Pirate Borg

Writing: Very little writing outside of the core content of the Product

Art/design: Well laid out using what appears to be Stock artwork of a Dodo Bird, similar to a historical type of text transmuted to The Dark Caribbean

Usability: If you happen to have exhausted the existing Sentient Animals in Pirate Borg and what to try something quite unique then this Class is sure to meet that need.

The Natural Philosopher

Concept: New Character Class for Pirate Borg

Content: The ocean of knowledge is vast and filled with monsters... should you choose to chart it, you too may become one! "The Natural Philosopher" is a player class for the game Pirate Borg.

Writing: Something a bit more esoteric in form for this supplement is a departure from the Pirate Borg norm but it is well written and cleverly presented.

Art/design: Colourful and vibrant artwork if a little cluttered.

Usability: This Class would be a good fit for a Player who is perhaps not yet ready to embrace the more eldritch aspects of The Dark Caribbean as it is more of a scholarly pursuit at the beginning.

The Pyrate

Content: One new Class for your Pirates to choose from, everything you need to bring forth the Pyrate, and the flames that go with it.

Writing: Exceptionally well written this entry not only provides a unique and entertaining Class addition but it also comes with some helpful tips on how to introduce it in a balanced and entertaining way.

The Quack

Concept: A tongue in cheek Class for Pirate Borg

Content: Everything you need in a three page supplement to make your very own Quack, a person of questionable knowledge and 'science'.

Writing: As with the class itself the writing is very much steeped in pseudo-science and silly rhetoric but it is quite entertaining.

Art/design: Reminiscent of the old Snake Oil Salesmen out of the old west in the early days of America the design is whimsical but functional in all aspects.

Usability: Something for the silly player in your group.. almost every group has one and this Class simply begs for that treatment.

The Quartermaster and The Card Shark

Concept: Two new Classes for Pirate Borg

Content: Two fully fleshed out Classes and their associated Skills, The Card Shark - a weaver of luck,  and The Quartermaster an expert in Command.

Writing: Two very interesting Classes with well done descriptions, flavour text and tables for each. Quite uniquely done.

Art/design: Unfortunately the artwork does little to service this entry well. While it sets a tone, it does little to make the product readable at a glance.

Usability: These two classes would need to be carefully added to an existing game to ensure balance is maintained. While many of the Class abilities are interesting and refreshing they can also be quite powerful.

The Skinwalker Class

Concept: The Skinwalker Class
Content: Legends speak of those living deep in the forest and far from prying eyes who have made pacts with entities from the Faerie Realm to gain transformative powers. Able to change into different beasts and vermin, you can never quite tell if you are in their presence making them excellent infiltrators and spies.  In their natural form, skinwalkers appear as ordinary humans, hiding their true nature from the world, but should they transform in public they will draw ire and suspicion.
The Skinwalker is a new class for Mork Borg & Pirate Borg that grants players new options for gameplay through the ability to transform into other creatures.

The Tattooed & The Griot

Concept: The Tattooed & The Griot are two PC classes for Pirate Borg.

Content: As the title suggests these are two new Character Classes for your Pirate Borg game.

Writing: Two very interesting Classes for a more esoteric approach to your game. Both are well realized and presented in an engaging way.

Art/design: Excellent artwork, however the text of the Classes is somewhat muddled by the colour choices and font sizing.

Usability: Every Pirate needs/wants/gets a Tattoo at some stage of their life and this supplement lets them make a Class of it, similarly the concept of a Storytelling Pirate who can sway your mind with a great tale is also something classical to a Pirate game. Definitely worth checking out.

The Way of the Worm

Concept: Crique des Vermineux looks like a serene fishing village at first glance, but those who dwell here ultimately live to feed the Mother of Worms. This module, suitable to be integrated into a multi-session campaign or to be played as a one-shot, will bring to you the horrors of an eldritch PARASITE.

 Content:

  • Original, hand-drawn art on almost every page.
  • 4 illustrated, major NPCs to make your days worse.
  • The Worm-Ridden: A new Haunted Soul Class for Pirate Borg.
  • Crique des Vermineux: A former French colony turned secret haven of the Wretched. A town to be explored on 4 pages with rumor and encounter tables.

  • A Wretched Generator to create the NPCs you need!
  • VTT Files with tokens and maps for you to print out or use digitally.

Writing: Having won the Award for Best Adventure in the CABIN FEVER Game Jam, The Way of the Worm is a fully realized locale, replete with Tips on how to best make use of its contents. Every entry is concise and clearly presented to you in a format that never overwhelms despite the rich depth that is included. Often times the Creators make mention of how best to use the material or what you might need to do in order to make it your own which is a blessing in disguise as they clearly indicate that, while the Adventure is complete, that there still remains some work for the potential Harbourmaster to engage in.

Art/design: Artistically this Adventure is a pure joy to read and explore. At no point does the layout overwhelm the text, everything has been presented with great attention to detail. Maps and interior Art are elegantly used, well keyed and appear in a Spread format for ease of use and removes the need for constant page flipping/scrolling.

Usability: There is so much content in this Adventure and with the 'twist' of placing Time pressure on the Players it makes for an excellent outing in to the more horrific aspects of The Dark Caribbean. In a Genre replete with intended 'One Shots' The Way of the Worm will provide many sessions of fun for any crew.

Content: 13 Pages of Adventures, two new Classes and a new NPC Pirate Captain.

Writing: Upon Red Tides is an immersive read if you embrace its core concepts and go with the flow. Exceptionally well written and presented.

Art/design: Layout and Artwork are top notch in this entry, colour choices are vivid and bold enough without being sloppy or garish. While some of the font choices are a little too thematic making them difficult to read in PDF without considerable zooming in it takes away nothing from the effectiveness of their use.
