This Product was an Entrant in the Cabin Fever Game Jam 2024

How Dare Ye!

Concept: A Collection of Insults suitable for any Pirate!

Content: Four D20 Tables of Insults, Rebuttals and Declarations for your favourite pirate crew!

Writing: Written in interesting tones, these jibes are sure to spruce up any pirate conversation.

Art/design: Unfortunately awkward layout and font choices make this product a little less visually appealing than it might otherwise be.

Usability: If you've ever struggled to find a witty retort or other scathing comeback from an NPC to deliver to your Players this might be a well needed addition of variety to your piratical speech.

La Mulata

Concept: A ship and her crew for use with Pirate Borg

Content: La Mulata contains the titular Ship and a small Crew which she carries along with inspiration for what the ship carries, where she might go and so forth.

Writing: La Mulata is a breath of fresh air in written form. Thematically an excellent work with that perfect meeting of design and function.

Art/design: Using a deceptively simple and yet somehow evocative art style, La Mulata is actually a lot of fun to read with several small map locations and interesting use of design to draw the eye to the content.

Usability: How often have you had a Crew find a harbour and say "What ships are in port?" and you scramble for ideas on the fly? Well La Mulata takes one entry off that list and even comes with a small crew should your Players want to interact with someone other than "Generic Pirate B" Simple motives and several hooks allow you to drop La Mulata anywhere and have it be effective.

Loathridge Cay

Concept: It is rumored that a hoard of wealth was being laundered through the Dark Caribbean on a cruise ship filled to the brim with the most elite families of London. You've sighted a ship marooned on a volcanic island that appears to match the description of the cruise ship, though there appears to be a group of zombies dancing on its main deck and the beach is overrun with skulls that are walking around. You are confident you could stand a chance, if it weren't for the smoke that has just started to rise from the peaks of the volcanic ridges that divide the island.

Content: Contains everything you need to run the adventure with keyed maps and handouts.

Writing: Unfortunately poor grammar dots the entry but does not make the product unusable, tongue in cheek to be sure as a concept.

Art/design: No artwork present in the Adventure itself, however the three included maps are well done. Layout of the Adventure itself is clean, however there remains quite a lot of negative blank space on some pages.

Usability: If you want to have your crew enjoy a little silly fun (that can still be dangerous at many points) this Adventure is ideally suited for that.

Long Pig

Concept: An Island adventure of porcine delight

Content: A short form adventure on an island overrun with feral swine.

Writing: Well written, at once horrifying and a little silly with dark undertones.

Art/design: Excellent use of Public Domain and Stock Artwork, colour choices are perfect and fonts are well used in this entry.

Usability: When your Crew has perhaps gotten a little too big for their 'britches' this Adventure would be a fun interlude to remind them that even the more simple beasts of The Dark Caribbean can be a mighty threat!

Never Meet Your Maker

Concept: People are missing at Port Mason, home of a defunct ash refinery. Is it the corrupt Governor? Or perhaps the ghost of old Eli Cunningham. Maybe it's just the landmine crabs taking their victims. There are sinister activities afoot and secrets to be told. Or taken to the grave...

Content: A full adventure locale with Maps, NPCs and Encounter information.

Writing: Very well written with just enough depth to bring the location to proper life.

Art/design: Limited artwork but what is present is exceptional. Layout is fairly simple but is just enough to add to the whole. Could do with some more Area separation but that is a minor detail at best.

Usability: Thankfully Port Mason can exist almost anywhere you need it to and that makes it invaluable to a Harbourmaster who needs a Port in a hurry! Add in the detail of the location and it is a dream supplement for any Harbourmaster who hasn't the time to generate an entire region.

Art/design: Layout and Font choices are spectacular, artwork is beautifully used and serves to accent the whole instead of taking the stage.  Colour choices are highly complimentary to the whole.

Usability: Every Pirate wants to go to Tortuga at some point in their career, this adventure serves its purpose without also leaving a Crew with no clear goals and an entire city to explore. As an Introduction to Tortuga one could hardly ask for better.

Content: Everything you might need to play as a Man-Atee Character.

Writing: Very bare bones, a simple Character Class

Art/design: Lovely Man-atee artwork dominates this entry, unfortunately the Background clutters the text of the entry quite a bit.

  • The Pale Oak: Mysterious pirate-sages transformed into gleaming driftwood, wandering the waves and whispering of secrets.
  • The Slime: Infinite Tess captains a dead whale-submarine and a crew of oozing cadavers on her quest to find her lost soul... and you may hold the secret of its fate.

Art/design: A near perfect compliment to the writing, the art and layout of this supplement are astonishing. Blending together seamlessly with the writing to create a piece of pirate art.

Usability: Every Harbourmaster worth their salt takes great pains to bring The Dark Caribbean to life and infuse the setting into the minds of their Players and this supplement is a masterwork in that concept. Each gang is unique and well rounded enough to that it could easily be added to a variety of locales as needed. A careful Harbourmaster will need to consider some of the items it will introduce to their game however as some of them may influence game balance.

Privateer & Powder Monkey

Concept: Two new Classes for your Pirate Borg Game

Content: Rules for two new Classes, Powder Monkey and Privateer

Writing: Concise writing in keeping with the Pirate Borg Core Rules

Art/design: Beautiful layout and excellent use of art lend a unique and visually appealing theme to both of these Classes, some slight difficulty reading a small portion of the text but it is easily puzzled out.

Usability: If you play Pirate Borg long enough.. someone discovers Bombs and then the world changes. This supplement gives you a Class to use with that person, the Powder Monkey. Alongside it.. if you have ever wanted to begin as a Privateer, well then this is definitely the Class for you with a very unique and engaging twist as you level up!

Random I Am

Concept: Rollable Tables for Tavern Drink and Dining options

Content: 2 Rollable D20 Tables to enhance your drinking and dining in The Dark Caribbean.

Writing: All items have a short and highly descriptive contents area.

Art/design: Minimalist layout serves this supplement very well as it allows the table to function quickly which is what is needed.

Usability: More variety in the little things of your Pirate Borg game give it that 'lived in' feeling that so many players and Harbourmasters crave. This little supplement adds to your repertoire by giving your Players something to chew on ( I apologize for nothing! ) in their Roleplay which can be a treasure all its own.

Random Missions and Dire Calamities

Concept: Two Table Generators for Pirate Borg

Content: Two extensive tables, one for generating a randomized mission for your players and the other a table to plague your players with a calamity.

Writing: Both sets of tables are excellently detailed and very well written in precise formats and with the ubiquitous Pirate Borg feel.

Art/design: Unfortunately low resolution on the background images takes away from the presentation of this product, as does the font size and colour choices on the Random Mission Table (remedied by scaling the page size up on the document). However the Calamities Table is much more easily read.

Usability: As any Harbourmaster worth their salt knows, there will be times when you just need to let the dice decide where your creativity gets directed. This supplement allows you to do that without repetition for quite some time and yields excellent results. As a Harbourmaster Prep tool I would recommend this one without reservation.

Content: Five unique Relics with which to reward or torment your Crew.

Writing: Based on Lithuanian lore these items are all fascinating the writing/rules created for them are equally so.

Art/design: Perhaps the only detriment to this product is the Layout and Font selections.. it is not very easy to read this product in some areas due to art and layout selections.

Usability: Every Harbourmaster wants to have their Crew pick up interesting loot and these Relics all fit that bill perfectly. Your Players will never forget getting these truly unique items.

Scrimshaw

Concept: Four brand new Classes for use in Pirate Borg

Content:

  • The Angler, a former fisherman turned pirate. Unlike their rowdy compatriots, they have the patience and skill to successfully reel up fish from the inky depths in which they dwell.
  • The Coagulant, a horrific nightmare altered by alchemy gone wrong. To survive, they must fuse their body with that of another, subsuming flesh and bone into themselves to once again become whole.
  • The Reaper, heavily inspired by DEADBOLT from Hopoo Games, the other game with a drug called ash that comes from the corpses of undead. They are skilled assassins and hunters of the damned.
  • The Shipwright, an on-board mechanic to keep boats going through constant wear-and-tear. Their specialized skills let them both repair and modify ships with everything from hull-smashing cannons to wheels.

Writing: As one might expect the writing of these Classes is excellent, so much so that this product one the Cabin Fever Game Jam award for Best PC Class.

Art/design: Simply incredibly thematic choices for both art and layout were made in the crafting of this remarkable supplement. It is pleasing to the eye, exceedingly mindful of the setting and a joy to read.

Usability: Any or all of these Classes could be seamlessly added to any Pirate Borg game without worry about Rules Balance which is something often on the mind of any Harbourmaser.

Shades of Bleakheart

Concept: A three-part adventure for a crew of scurvy pirates.  The legend of Mavis Bleakheart says she amassed more loot than the Spanish Armada could carry in a year.  But most prized is the fabled Spectral Saber – an ancient relic to make any pirate a king.  The crew have found information pointing to the location of her hideout.  But beware, tavern tales say the island is haunted.

Content: Three entries for One, a Naval Battle, an Island Adventure and a Cave Crawl to round it all out. Maps and Encounter Keys are provided for all.

Writing: Nicely written and easily understood, language and grammar are excellent.

Art/design: A touch on the simplistic side but it does not take away from the content in the slightest, solid colour choices do well to accentuate the content and Artwork/Map placements are clear as well as effective.

Usability: Something for everyone in this entry. Taken in parts it is an effective tool for an adventure of any type with no specific order of use required.

Shanties of the Sargasso

Concept: Bermuda is awash with choking sargassum. The dead rise from its tangles. A patch of seaweed and flotsam drifts westward, carrying the broken ships of the damned.  Between the lapping waves one can hear their mournful dirges, the Shanties of the Sargasso.

Content: Shanties of the Sargasso includes setting information on Bermuda (now the Isle of Devils), a new class, new monsters, and an ASH-laden adventure atop a cluster of shipwrecks tangled up among the sargassum. It's replete with two-faced devils who smoke tobacco from their rear ends, living seaweed bursting from beneath the surface of the water, and all manner of depravity.

Writing: Shanties is superb in its writing, exceptionally engaging content.

Art/design: Embracing a more Mork Borg aesthetic with a Pirate Borg colour palette, the layout and font selection is beautiful despite the raucous amount of colour and stylized layout it works perfectly well and is remarkably easy to read/navigate.

Usability: Whether it is for the Adventure alone or the new Ash Dealer class, this Supplement is well worth the addition to your Pirate Borg Library. It epitomizes the Third Party license beautifully.

Shrine of the Slithering Slumber

Concept: Shrine of the Slithering Slumber is an island-crawl for Pirate Borg.

Content: An extensive island crawl adventure locale in The Dark Yucatan, packed with encounter locations, rollable tables and all manner of new secrets to unearth all guarded by mysterious beasties!

Writing: Expertly done to say the least, this entire Adventure is so wonderfully well written that it is just plain fun to read it, never mind play it. All aspects of The Dark Yucatan feel well thought out and carry the right amount of weight for a largely unexplored region of The Dark Caribbean.

Art/design: Art and layout are amazing in this entry, from the variable shading of the backgrounds to allow for ease of reading and the subtle changes in font usage throughout to guide the readers eye to the correct areas on the page.

Usability: While it may be set in The Dark Yucatan this adventure is something that every Harbourmaster needs to find a way to bring their groups around to checking out. Plot hooks don't even feel like a hook, they effortlessly weave themselves in to the narrative. Even if you do not get it to the table you need to absorb this as it will uplift you in the role of Harbourmaster.

Spirits High Waters Deep

Content: 6 Fully realized Rollable Tables, a Keyed overworld Map of the Region (with an option to download an UnKeyed version of the same). Three unique encounters to place as you wish.

Writing: Spirits High, Waters Deep is absolutely stuffed to the gills with content to enjoy. Clearly written with the Harbourmaster in mind it assumes a basic level of knowledge with the world of The Dark Caribbean and Pirate Borg but also provides handy page references for looking up Official Content. The sometimes irreverent style of the Author is a welcome addition as it puts you in a place of feeling as though you are speaking to a fellow Harbourmaster.

Art/design: Pulling from both Original and Public Domain sources all of the Artwork in this Adventure helps to set the tone quite well, what maps are included are blessedly clear and well done. In particular the Hex Map included is simply spectacular.

Usability: Spirits High, Waters Deep would be a great way to start off a Pirate Crew in The Dark Caribbean. Letting your players fill in the Hex Map and allowing you as a Harbourmaster to populate any content from other Adventures in to Blank Hexes as needed/desired. It is even suggested by the Author on several occasions!

Taijiquan Drunken Fighter

Concept: A new Class for Pirate Borg

Content: Everything you need to start your adventure as a Drunken Fighter.

Writing: An interesting and well balanced Class, a bit of a throwback to classic Drunken Master-esque movies and other hollywood tropes. Not weighed down overmuch with background, it is a bit of a relief that the Class is left for the Player to make their own as the Classes in the Core Book also do.

Art/design: Artwork is well refined, layout is excellent and easy to access quickly.

Usability: Toning back the overt mysticism this Class make quality use of existing Rules and slightly expands on them in a well balanced way.

Writing: Unfortunately poorly written though the errors are not problematic enough to stop anyone from using the Product.

Art/design: Simple layout, legible if not for the questionable font choices and colour options.

Usability: This one will require some attention to balance for any Harbourmaster who wishes to make use of it as several abilities are quite powerful on this Class.

The Avatars Awaken

Concept: Create your own Avatar

Content: Large Rollable Table with which to randomly generate an Avatar to send against your Pirate Crew.

Writing: Expertly written and edited to provide you with exactly what you need and nothing else.

Art/design: Layout and Design of this product are very tightly done, the table is clearly setup and labelled, fonts are well chosen and colour palette is very complimentary to the core concept of temple exploration.

Usability: Every Harbourmaster eventually stumbles into the 'trap' of trying to come up with compelling or at the very least interesting Monsters to send against their players and this supplement hopes to alleviate some of that burden by brining you a host of Avatars and their abilities to confound your group. Certainly an excellent Generator Tool for any Temple crawling adventure.

The Barnacle Betsy

Concept: Adventure Location for Pirate Borg

Content: An Adventure location of a shipwreck with a bit of treasure to be had for the daring.

Writing: This adventure is very well written, attention to detail abounds and the theme is kept strongly throughout.

Art/design: As with the prose itself the design of this Adventure is all about the Dark and scary aspects. Layout and Artwork both work hand in hand to give you the sense of eerie unknown.

Usability: This deceptively short and yet dangerous adventure is a great thing to tempt any Crew with. Short and to the point it can be quite lethal for the Crew should they miss some of the story prompts within.

The Bloody Bones of Hell's Wake

Concept: An island adventure on Hell's Wake Isle

Content: Sixteen pages of adventure, 8 unique Sites, 10 new NPCs and 10 Stat Blocks for new Enemies

Writing: Great care in the details has been taken by the author to bring forth a sense of deep atmosphere with this product. An impressive amount of world building has been packed in to this product in a very professional manner.

Art/design: Stylistically this product is a gem, Spread layouts are very reminiscent of the Pirate Borg core book and will be immediately recognized as an influence here. Every spread is laid out well with great care to font selection, colours and overall design to make this adventure a joy to read.

Usability: This adventure would be perfect for any Harbourmaster to slot in to their current campaign in the event of a shipwreck or other such occurrence and comes with everything you might need to run it effectively with little to no preparation beyond what is covered inside.

The Curse of Dalmoth Isle

Concept: Ships and Crews have been going missing around the wayward Darmoth Isle. Will your crew be able to figure out the cause before its to late, or will you join the other departed.

Content: A low to mid level adventure designed for Pirate Borg.

Writing: Very well written, easily followed and properly conceived.

Art/design: Artwork is clear, somewhat rudimentary but extremely easy to use/understand. Layout could certainly use some work in the way of content breaks or Title bars, but again, it does not detract from the usefulness overmuch. Lacking in polish perhaps, but still a gem.

Usability: This is an excellent mystery adventure if your Players are up for that sort of thing. If they happen not to be, it is easy enough to make some slight alterations and use it for another purpose. Quite a lot of information is presented for you to make use of!

The Curse of El Dorado (Abridged)

Concept: Embark with a treasure map to El Dorado, guiding adventurers through the lush, untamed jungles of Colombia on a hex crawl to uncover the legendary City of Gold. As they delve into the city's ancient secrets, players can choose to unravel its cursed history or solely amass the fabled treasure. Yet, an insidious curse lies in wait, gradually taking hold of their minds. Eventually, they must confront the malevolent force of The Blood Red Gold of El Dorado, realizing that their obsession with the treasure may come at a perilous cost.

Content: An Adventure for a more seasoned Pirate Crew, replete with Maps both keyed and not, and a large variety of locales to explore. Intended for an extended stay this Hex Crawl carries a great deal of meat on its bones.

Writing: This Adventure is well written and easy to adapt to any existing Campaign and is blessedly HyperLinked if you are you using the PDF.

Art/design: Perhaps the sole shortfall of this offering is the aesthetic value of its layout. Of particular note is a remarkable Hex Map of the area that seems to be unfortunately 'squished' to fit the page. Other than that a rather plain font choice, while legible, is a bit jarring an experience in a Pirate Borg product. However the artwork itself is excellent on most every count.

Usability: This Adventure would be an excellent locale to explore for any properly experienced group of Pirates. Intended for a longer stay and more of an overland adventure than is typical of Pirate Borg. With a little effort to flesh out some of the random locations the Map alone would make this an must have.

The Dark Column

Concept: Dungeon Crawl Adventure for Pirate Borg

Content: This mini-adventure contains the basic setting of one location with a few game tables, puzzles, awesome opponents, treasures and artifacts.

Writing: Writing for The Dark Column is absolutely packed with detail, depth and creativity to draw in any group.

Art/design: Original artwork and maps abound in this offering, the layout is crisp and engaging to the eye and the imaginational in turn. Colours are well chosen and used effectively to drive your attention to the correct areas of the page on every spread.

Usability: This adventure could easily be a starting point, albeit a fairly brutal one, to any group. I would suggest it more as a transition piece if you wanted to sit back and let your players do their thing and base your future games on their choices. The Dark Column is definitely packed with enough detail to keep your Players engaged for several sessions while you decide where to take them when they conclude this adventure.

The Dodo Bird

Concept: A new Sentient Animal Entry

Content: One new Class, The Dodo Bird, for your Sentient Animal Table in Pirate Borg
