Spirits High Waters Deep

Concept: Hexcrawl your way across a re-usable Map fraught with Adventure and Peril!

Content: 6 Fully realized Rollable Tables, a Keyed overworld Map of the Region (with an option to download an UnKeyed version of the same). Three unique encounters to place as you wish.

Writing: Spirits High, Waters Deep is absolutely stuffed to the gills with content to enjoy. Clearly written with the Harbourmaster in mind it assumes a basic level of knowledge with the world of The Dark Caribbean and Pirate Borg but also provides handy page references for looking up Official Content. The sometimes irreverent style of the Author is a welcome addition as it puts you in a place of feeling as though you are speaking to a fellow Harbourmaster.

Art/design: Pulling from both Original and Public Domain sources all of the Artwork in this Adventure helps to set the tone quite well, what maps are included are blessedly clear and well done. In particular the Hex Map included is simply spectacular.

Usability: Spirits High, Waters Deep would be a great way to start off a Pirate Crew in The Dark Caribbean. Letting your players fill in the Hex Map and allowing you as a Harbourmaster to populate any content from other Adventures in to Blank Hexes as needed/desired. It is even suggested by the Author on several occasions!

Taijiquan Drunken Fighter

Concept: A new Class for Pirate Borg

Content: Everything you need to start your adventure as a Drunken Fighter.

Writing: An interesting and well balanced Class, a bit of a throwback to classic Drunken Master-esque movies and other hollywood tropes. Not weighed down overmuch with background, it is a bit of a relief that the Class is left for the Player to make their own as the Classes in the Core Book also do.

Art/design: Artwork is well refined, layout is excellent and easy to access quickly.

Usability: Toning back the overt mysticism this Class make quality use of existing Rules and slightly expands on them in a well balanced way.

The Barnacle Betsy

Concept: Adventure Location for Pirate Borg

Content: An Adventure location of a shipwreck with a bit of treasure to be had for the daring.

Writing: This adventure is very well written, attention to detail abounds and the theme is kept strongly throughout.

Art/design: As with the prose itself the design of this Adventure is all about the Dark and scary aspects. Layout and Artwork both work hand in hand to give you the sense of eerie unknown.

Every spread is laid out well with great care to font selection, colours and overall design to make this adventure a joy to read.

Usability: This adventure could easily be a starting point, albeit a fairly brutal one, to any group. I would suggest it more as a transition piece if you wanted to sit back and let your players do their thing and base your future games on their choices. The Dark Column is definitely packed with enough detail to keep your Players engaged for several sessions while you decide where to take them when they conclude this adventure.

Content: The ocean of knowledge is vast and filled with monsters... should you choose to chart it, you too may become one! "The Natural Philosopher" is a player class for the game Pirate Borg.

Writing: Something a bit more esoteric in form for this supplement is a departure from the Pirate Borg norm but it is well written and cleverly presented.

Art/design: Colourful and vibrant artwork if a little cluttered.

Content: Two fully fleshed out Classes and their associated Skills, The Card Shark - a weaver of luck,  and The Quartermaster an expert in Command.

Writing: Two very interesting Classes with well done descriptions, flavour text and tables for each. Quite uniquely done.

Art/design: Unfortunately the artwork does little to service this entry well. While it sets a tone, it does little to make the product readable at a glance.

Usability: These two classes would need to be carefully added to an existing game to ensure balance is maintained. While many of the Class abilities are interesting and refreshing they can also be quite powerful.

  • VTT Files with tokens and maps for you to print out or use digitally.

Writing: Having won the Award for Best Adventure in the CABIN FEVER Game Jam, The Way of the Worm is a fully realized locale, replete with Tips on how to best make use of its contents. Every entry is concise and clearly presented to you in a format that never overwhelms despite the rich depth that is included. Often times the Creators make mention of how best to use the material or what you might need to do in order to make it your own which is a blessing in disguise as they clearly indicate that, while the Adventure is complete, that there still remains some work for the potential Harbourmaster to engage in.

Art/design: Artistically this Adventure is a pure joy to read and explore. At no point does the layout overwhelm the text, everything has been presented with great attention to detail. Maps and interior Art are elegantly used, well keyed and appear in a Spread format for ease of use and removes the need for constant page flipping/scrolling.

Usability: There is so much content in this Adventure and with the 'twist' of placing Time pressure on the Players it makes for an excellent outing in to the more horrific aspects of The Dark Caribbean. While some of the font choices are a little too thematic making them difficult to read in PDF without considerable zooming in it takes away nothing from the effectiveness of their use.

Usability: Easily recommendable for the abundance of content that can quickly and easily be taken in to any Harbourmasters library. A trove of HMing treasure to be sure.
